John Lee Anchors

SAVANNAH – John Lee Anchors died November 3, 2015. He was born March 28, 1923 in Savannah to parents Thomas Bell and Nafosia Wynne Anchors. He grew up at Bethesda Home for Boys and later held several offices in the Bethesda Alumni, most recently as treasurer.
During World War II, he served in the Headquarters Battery of the 483rd Anti-aircraft Artillery Battalion in the Pacific theater. After the war he attended Armstrong Junior College and graduated from Emory University with a BBA degree. He retired from the Internal Revenue Service after nearly 30 years service during which time he became a Certified Public Accountant. In later years he had a small tax accounting practice.
He was a member of the Bethesda Alumni, the First Baptist Church of Savannah, the Georgia Society of CPA’s and the AICPA.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by brothers: Alvah Oliver, Theopilus, Francis Anchors and sister, Faith English.
John is survived by his wife of 67 years, Barbara Cowan Anchors; one daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy Elizabeth Usher (Steve) of Savannah, four sons; Arthur Lee Anchors of Raleigh, North Carolina, William Cowan Anchors (Marilyn) of Atlanta, David Wynne Anchors and Richard Matthew Anchors of Savannah. He leaves six grandchildren: Thomas Usher (Jill) of Savannah, Robert Usher of Warner Robins, Cassandra and Patrick Anchors of Atlanta, Kelly Gardner of Nashville, Tennessee and Michelle Kallenberger (Kris) of Cincinnati, Ohio. Surviving also are three great grandchildren: June and Sue Usher, and Isaac Gardner and a number of cousins, nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held at 6:00 pm Friday, November 6, 2015 at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel. The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm until 6:00 pm.
